The Youth to Washington DC is held annually in June, sponsored by the Association of Illinois Electric Cooperative (AIEC). MCTC sponsors two (2) students from the contingent of Youth Day Participants. The selected students are chosen by an interview process conducted on Youth Day. The trip is filled with educational and personal experiences. There are approximately sixty (60) or more students from throughout Illinois selected to represent their Cooperatives. On their way to Washington DC they will stop at Gettysburg and tour the Museum and the many historic battle grounds and sites. While in the Nation’s Capital they will meet up with students from across the US at an inspirational Pep Rally. This is an all expense paid trip for the students and an opportunity for them to meet with their Federal officials and tour the many historic sites, along with meeting students from across the US. While in the Nations Capital students will spend the week visiting historically significant national sites, touring the many historical memorials, Arlington Cemetery and witness the changing of the guard at the “Tomb of the Unknown Soldier”. They will also take a river boat cruise down the Potomac, tour the Royal Embassy of Saudi Arabia, visit the Supreme Court and Capitol, and of course, if at all possible, tour the White House. The entire week is filled with activities that keep the students entertained throughout. Not only do they gain knowledge of our government and heritage but they gain new friendships and memories that they will have for a lifetime.
Both Youth Day and Youth to Washington DC Tour are wonderful opportunities for students. We are very pleased to offer these educational programs to area high school juniors and home schooled equivalents.
