“Owned By Those We Serve”

MCTC

Serving Rural Communities in Fulton, Henry, Knox, McDonough, Peoria and Stark Counties.

At MCTC we feel the youth within our service area today will play a key role in keeping the rural areas alive in the future. That is why it is so important they are given the same technology and opportunities as students in larger cities. In keeping with this vision we provide the schools within our service area high speed Internet access at no charge, which saves the school districts thousands of dollars a year to be used towards other educational material. We also offer the Public Libraries within our service area high speed Internet at no charge, so all members have the opportunity to access the Internet. MCTC is involved in furthering the education of the youth within our area by offering the following programs:

Youth Day
Youth To Washington DC Tour

MCTC $1,000.00 College Scholarship
FRS $2,500.00 College Scholarship

Youth Day 2009 - April 1

Youth Day

Mid Century sponsors two (2) students from each high school serving our members, on “Youth Day” to the State Capital.  This is a statewide opportunity for high school juniors or home schooled equivalents to meet with their State Representatives and Senators, along with other officials in State Government and tour the many historic sites, sponsored by the Association of Illinois Electric Cooperatives (AIEC). There is no cost to the student and all meals are provided for the day. Two students participating in this event have the opportunity to represent MCTC in Washington DC during the Annual “Youth To Washington DC Tour, which is held one week each June.

If your child is interested in participating in this event all information is sent to the Guidance Counselors at the area schools in late January to early February. Youth Day is generally held in April on a Wednesday. If your child is home schooled and would like to participate, please contact our business office at 309-778-8611 or toll free 877-643-2368.

*Students are responsible for their transportation to Mid Century Telephone Cooperative.

Youth Tour 2009 - June 12-19

Youth To Washington DC Tour

The Youth to Washington DC is held annually in June, sponsored by the Association of Illinois Electric Cooperative (AIEC). MCTC sponsors two (2) students from the contingent of Youth Day Participants. The selected students are chosen by an interview process conducted on Youth Day. The trip is filled with educational and personal experiences. There are approximately sixty (60) or more students from throughout Illinois selected to represent their Cooperatives. On their way to Washington DC they will stop at Gettysburg and tour the Museum and the many historic battle grounds and sites. While in the Nation’s Capital they will meet up with students from across the US at an inspirational Pep Rally. This is an all expense paid trip for the students and an opportunity for them to meet with their Federal officials and tour the many historic sites, along with meeting students from across the US. While in the Nations Capital students will spend the week visiting historically significant national sites, touring the many historical memorials, Arlington Cemetery and witness the changing of the guard at the “Tomb of the Unknown Soldier”. They will also take a river boat cruise down the Potomac, tour the Royal Embassy of Saudi Arabia, visit the Supreme Court and Capitol, and of course, if at all possible, tour the White House. The entire week is filled with activities that keep the students entertained throughout. Not only do they gain knowledge of our government and heritage but they gain new friendships and memories that they will have for a lifetime.

Both Youth Day and Youth to Washington DC Tour are wonderful opportunities for students. We are very pleased to offer these educational programs to area high school juniors and home schooled equivalents.

College Scholarships

MCTC awards four $1,000.00 College Scholarships to students whose parent/guardian is a member of the Cooperative. This is our way of ensuring that one of our communities’ children has the privilege to attend college and receive the education that he/she deserves, not only to empower him/herself, but ultimately, for the betterment of the whole community. Deadline for the MCTC College Scholarship application is March 1, any applications received after this date will be destroyed.

In addition to the MCTC College Scholarship we partner with the Foundation for Rural Service (FRS) in offering a $2,500.00 College Scholarship. The eligibility requirements are the same but the competition is much greater, since it incorporates students from Cooperatives throughout the US. FRS awarded thirty scholarships in 2008. The FRS scholarship requires a signature from MCTC General Manager prior to being submitted. We request this scholarship application be in to our office at least one week prior to the March 1st deadline to assure there is adequate time to obtain the signature. We will mail the application to the Foundation after the signature is obtained for you.

Scholarships are open to high school seniors or equivalent, who have been accepted by an accredited two/four year college/university or vocational-technical school.

Winners for either application will be notified in May 2008. Awards are paid upon proof of registration at an Institute of higher education and will be issued in August 2008.

Special consideration is given to students expressing an interest to return to a rural community following graduation.

Please refer to applications for eligibility guidelines and terms and conditions. Applications are sent to the schools serving our members and are available for download by clicking the links below.  If you have any questions pertaining to the scholarship please contact our business office at (309) 778-8611 or 1-877-643-2368 or email paula@midcentury.com (please refer to scholarship in the subject field.)
